The harm of high hemoglobin in pregnant women to mother and fetus

Everyone knows that anemia in pregnant women is detrimental to fetal development and health, but most people don\’t know that high hemoglobin is as harmful to the mother and fetus as anemia.

In recent years, researchers from the School of Medicine at the University of Wales in the UK investigated 54,382 singleton pregnancies and found that pregnant women with high prenatal hemoglobin (13.2 g%) or low hemoglobin (10.4 g%) had higher prenatal pregnancy rates. . Pregnancy outcomes are higher than those with intermediate hemoglobin prenatal fetal death, prematurity, or low birth weight neonates. Because high hemoglobin during pregnancy may affect the entire plasma volume, increase the blood viscosity of pregnant women, thereby affecting the normal blood circulation of the uterus and placenta, and even increase the chance of placental thrombosis.

Clinical studies have also proven that high hemoglobin is closely related to secondary hypertension. Only 7% of first-time mothers with hemoglobin less than 10.5 g developed hypertension, compared with 42% of first-time mothers with hemoglobin above 14.5 g. It can be seen that the ideal hemoglobin range for pregnant women is: no less than 10.4 grams, no more than 13.2 grams, no more than 14.5 grams.

Therefore, pregnant women should check their hemoglobin regularly. If they find that their hemoglobin is not low during pregnancy, they should avoid taking iron supplements or other blood supplements.
