At Hengshui Middle School, teaching accidents are not considered until all homework is done.

Anyone who knows Hengzhong knows that Hengzhong leaves a lot of homework for students every day. How many? It is to ensure that no student can finish the homework. Once, I was chatting with a middle-level leader in Hengzhong about this matter. I asked him: \”What if a classmate really finished all his homework?\” He pondered for a moment and said leisurely: \”That\’s right. Teaching accident.\” -2- To be honest, I have never quite understood Hengzhong’s almost perverted approach. Children are faced with endless homework every day, which is too stressful. As soon as they open their eyes, there is an infinite amount of homework piled on them. Day after day, year after year, the children have become problem-solving machines. Moreover, there are a lot of unfinished homework every day, which will also cause serious waste. One is a waste of the teacher\’s time and energy in formulating questions, and the other is a waste of paper. Why is this necessary? I never understood it. The reason why I think of Hengzhong’s homework again is because I just saw a piece of news: Recently, the Education Bureau of Yinzhou District, Ningbo City, Zhejiang Province issued a regulation on the management of homework in primary and secondary schools, requiring respect for individual differences among students. The ten o\’clock homework has not been finished yet. With the parent\’s permission, the remaining homework can be skipped. As soon as the regulations came out, there was a lot of applause. However, some parents are worried about this, believing that this will become an excuse for their children not to do their homework. Some parents said that it is okay to write such a certificate once or twice, but if it is written too many times, it will definitely be rejected. It is conceivable that if a child has not finished his homework by ten o\’clock and the parents sign it, they will definitely inquire with other parents the next day. If they know that other people\’s children have finished their homework, you can imagine the panic in their hearts. Obviously, although the rule that you can stop writing if you have not finished writing by ten o\’clock is good, it may be difficult to be truly implemented. Why is this happening? The reason is that this regulation only takes into account the differences among individual students in the homework link, but does not reflect it in the homework link. The whole class is given the same homework. For the top students, they may be able to finish it easily before 8 o\’clock, while the underachievers may not be able to finish it without sleeping. In this case, simply asking that you don\’t have to write if you can\’t finish it at ten o\’clock will only cause panic in the hearts of some parents. On the other hand, the homework in Hengzhong is divided into three categories: \”required\”, \”optional\” and \”self-help\”. The required part is relatively small and the content is more basic, requiring students to complete it. The ones that cannot be completed are actually just optional ones. For the do-it-yourself and self-help parts, students can just do it according to their own abilities. Looking back now, this is actually the scientific aspect of Hengzhong’s homework arrangement. Even the best students will never have enough to eat, while students with lower levels can still master basic knowledge. Although Hengzhong\’s approach is suspected of allowing students to \”study at full load\”, it recognizes and takes into account the individual differences of students when doing homework, which is worth learning from. In fact, Hengzhong has truly made it a point to go back to the dormitory to sleep at ten o\’clock, regardless of whether he has finished his homework. It is irresponsible to talk about education and make regulations without individual differences. We all know the story of the pony crossing the river. The same river, the old cow thought it was very shallow, and the squirrel thought it would drown people. Individual differences are different and feelings are completely different. Nowadays, many places leave homework for students. The average level is the standard. In this way, excellent students will feel that there is too little homework, and low-level students will feel that there is too much homework every day. Therefore, to solve children\’s homework problems, we should implement stratification from the time of leaving homework. For example, teachers can assign different assignments based on students’ different abilities, or they can learn from Hengzhong’s model and divide assignments into “must-do” and “optional” parts. Points are limited. Parents do not understand the overall situation of the students in the class, nor do they understand the overall difficulty of a certain assignment. The person who knows best how much homework each child should do is the teacher. In this case, the amount of students\’ homework should be controlled by the teacher during the homework retention stage, rather than asking parents to sign a certificate when they cannot finish the homework. Hengzhong’s method of retaining homework may become a means to reduce students’ burden. This may sound absurd, but it is worth trying.
