Babies born one or two weeks later than due date are smarter

According to Singapore\’s \”Lianhe Zaobao\” report on the 5th, the latest research has found that if a baby born at full term (37 to 41 weeks) stays in the mother\’s body for 1 to 2 weeks, it will be of great benefit to his physical health and his brain development.

It is known that premature babies (born before 37 weeks) may have health and psychological problems. What to do if a baby is born late? American scientists conducted an experiment in which they compared the academic performance of babies born at full term with those born 1 to 2 weeks later. Babies born at full term mostly performed well on third-grade math and reading aloud tests, but still performed worse than babies born one to two weeks later.

Therefore, the researchers believe that the definition of preterm birth should be reconsidered based on this result.

The findings also cast doubt on the use of scheduled C-sections for premature births without medical reasons. Lead researcher Noble, an assistant professor of pediatrics at Columbia University Medical Center, said women should think carefully before choosing to give birth prematurely. Experts say C-sections can lead to complications during delivery, which can also lead to developmental delays.

It is reported that the survey targets 128,000 public school students in New York City, including a considerable number of children from poor families. Among those born at 37 weeks gestation, 2.3% had severe reading difficulties and 1.1% had moderate math problems. In comparison, only 1.8% and 0.9% of children born at 41 weeks of pregnancy had the above problems.
