It is a common phenomenon for pregnant women to snore during pregnancy. Most people do not pay attention to it, thinking that snoring is a sign of \”sleeping soundly\”, but it is not. Lin Min, deputy chief physician of the Department of Respiratory Medicine at the Third Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University (hereinafter referred to as the Third Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University), reminded that snoring is actually caused by upper respiratory tract stenosis and obstruction. Both are affected and are best diagnosed and treated promptly.
Pregnant woman who snores a lot during pregnancy almost dies
Recently, the Third Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University received a doctor who snored during pregnancy. Ms. Fu from Liwan District experienced obvious hunger after becoming pregnant, her food intake increased significantly, and she gained a lot of weight. At the same time, her husband noticed that she was making strange snoring sounds while sleeping. I thought it was because Ms. Fu was tired during pregnancy and slept soundly, so I didn\’t pay attention.
In the 26th week of pregnancy, Ms. Fu developed symptoms such as edema of both lower limbs, headache, and blurred vision. After going to the hospital for examination, the result showed that she had preeclampsia, and she was admitted to the hospital for treatment. After 2 weeks of conservative treatment, the condition continued to progress. The doctor conducted sleep apnea monitoring on the woman, and the results showed that she suffered from moderate obstructive sleep apnea hypopnea syndrome and moderate hypoxemia. Continuing antihypertensive, antispasmodic, symptomatic, supportive and non-invasive ventilator treatment for 2 weeks failed to control the condition. In the end, a cesarean section was performed at 30 weeks of pregnancy, which saved Ms. Fu\’s life and gave birth to a premature, low-birth-weight daughter.
Severe snoring, beware of apnea and hypoxia
In fact, many pregnant women who snore do not receive formal diagnosis and treatment in time, which eventually leads to tragedy. Lin Min said that snoring during pregnancy is a very common phenomenon. Snoring is caused by weight gain, fat accumulation, relatively narrow upper respiratory tract, coupled with the influence of pregnancy hormones, edema of the nasal mucosa and poor breathing.
Most people don\’t pay much attention to snoring and think that snoring is normal. However, if the snoring is severe, obstructive sleep apnea hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS), frequent apnea and hypoxia, will affect the health of pregnant women. It affects both the fetus and the fetus. Lin Min said.
Lin Min further explained that snoring in pregnant women may lead to gestational hypertension, eclampsia, gestational diabetes, stroke, cardiomyopathy, congestive heart failure, risk of hysterectomy, prolonged hospitalization, increased ICU admission rate, etc. At the same time, it can also cause fetal growth restriction, stillbirth, neonatal asphyxia, premature birth, low birth weight babies, and affect the baby\’s neurological development. In short, snoring during pregnancy is very harmful. Once you find irregular snoring, high blood pressure, diabetes, etc., you should go to a pregnancy snoring clinic as soon as possible to avoid adverse consequences.
According to Lin Min, the prevalence of OSAHS in early and late pregnancy is 10.5% and 26.7% respectively, which is higher than that in non-pregnant women of childbearing age. Expectant mothers with chronic hypertension, preeclampsia, gestational diabetes, pre-pregnancy obesity or previous adverse pregnancy history are more likely to suffer from sleep ventilation disorders in the early, middle and late stages of pregnancy.Disorders that lead to hypoxia must be taken seriously.

More than 80% said their loved one snores while sleeping
Snoring is medically called snoring disorder. A recent health survey conducted by Family Doctor Online showed that more than 80% of participants clearly stated that their loved ones snore while sleeping.
Professor Feng Qixiao, chief physician of the Respiratory Department of the Hospital of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine of Southern Medical University, said that people who snore should go to the hospital for relevant examinations to rule out the possibility of sleep apnea syndrome in time. Sleep apnea affects various organs of the body to varying degrees, and in severe cases can induce sudden death.
For people who may have sleep apnea, Feng Qixiao recommends sleeping on the side at a 90-degree angle, either on the left or right side. In addition, he also reminded that more than 70% of sleep apnea patients are obese or overweight. Therefore, you must pay attention to maintaining your body shape, not to be overweight, and seek medical attention promptly if you find any problems. (Liang Yu)
