Beverages are essential for everyone’s daily life, among which Coca-Cola is a drink that many people like very much. But once couples start preparing for pregnancy, they start to be wary because many people say that Coca-Cola kills sperm. Rumors are spreading, are they true or false? Come and find out!
History: In 1985, Dr. Sharee A. Umpierre of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Harvard Medical School in the United States and her colleagues mixed sperm and cola in vitro, tested the number of viable sperm, and concluded that cola has a certain killing effect. In 1987, Hong Chuanyue and others from Taipei Veterans General Hospital tested that sperm still had transmembrane migration activity in the presence of cola, and concluded that cola did not affect sperm activity. These two studies with completely opposite conclusions jointly won the 2008 Ig Nobel Prize in Chemistry. No matter what the results of this in vitro laboratory study are, it is very unscientific to use Coke to flush the vagina afterwards for contraceptive purposes. Because before flushing, about 100,000 sperm may have reached the uterus. In addition, the sugar in Coke can easily cause bacterial infections in the genitals. Today, with the development of contraceptive methods, safer and more effective methods should be chosen. You know, it is believed that the idea of \”Coke kills sperm\” emerged in the 1950s, before oral contraceptive pills and a variety of other contraceptive methods emerged and became popular.
The truth: Between 2001 and 2006, Danish doctor Tina Kold Jensen investigated the sperm quality and caffeine intake of 2,554 young men. The results showed that daily drinking of coffee (total caffeine content is less than 800mg) and drinking cola (two 500ml bottles per day) do not affect the number, vitality and morphology of sperm at all. Do you really drink at least two bottles of Coke and at least 7 cups of coffee every day? If not, then there is no need to worry too much about the rumors about whether coffee and cola kill sperm. For a very small number (3%) of young people who drink \”huge amounts\” of cola or caffeine, some do suffer from reduced sperm quality. Dr. Jensen believes that these people are not just drinking more cola, but also have other unhealthy eating habits. In other words, drinking \”huge amounts\” of Coke is just one aspect of bad eating habits. Therefore, there is no evidence that drinking a lot of cola causes a decrease in sperm quality. It should be noted that although the total sperm count of these people who drank huge amounts of Coke dropped by 30%, they were still within the normal range of sperm count given by the World Health Organization.
To sum up, this rumor is self-defeating. However, Coke is a carbonated drink, containing carbon dioxide, sugar, phosphoric acid, etc., which will stimulate gastric juice secretion and affect calcium absorption, so it is better to drink less.
