How to care for edema during pregnancy at home

Edema in pregnant women generally occurs in the second and third trimester of pregnancy. Pregnant women may experience swelling starting from the skin of their ankles and extending upward to their calves, thighs, and even the skin all over their bodies. The skin is firm and shiny, and there are depressions when pressed with fingers.

1. Causes of edema

Due to pregnancy, secretions change, so the whole body blood volume increases by 15% compared to the original amount. At the same time, the enlarged uterus affects the return of the inferior vena cava (venous blood from the lower limbs that returns to the heart), causing blood stasis in the veins of the lower limbs. Elevated venous pressure allows fluid in blood vessels to filter downward into the tissues. After resting in bed at night, the edema formed during the day can subside.

2. Home care methods

1. Avoid standing for long periods of time.

2. If you are still at work, you should elevate your lower limbs during work breaks or lie down to rest if possible.

3. Do not lie on your back when sleeping at night. Lie on your left side to facilitate the return of blood from the inferior vena cava.

4. Take a hot bath before going to bed.

5. Mild edema does not require too much restriction of salt and water intake, but do not eat too salty food.

3. Expert reminder

Check your weight frequently. If the increase is too rapid, there may be latent edema. Pay more attention at this time to avoid pregnancy poisoning. If edema still exists after resting at night, it may be mild pregnancy poisoning, and you should go to the hospital for detailed examination and take measures in time.
