How to cultivate reading in first and second grade? (Read summary of frequently asked questions)

In the past few days, I have received several questions from parents about their children\’s reading. Today I will summarize them and briefly talk about my thoughts. I hope it can help everyone. 01 The first question: I have two children. The eldest is currently in second grade and only likes reading comics. The second child is currently in first grade and doesn’t like reading anymore. He has no books that he likes to read. What should I do? Regarding the boss\’s problem, the second graders cannot take their time. Before the end of third grade, children must have the ability to read independently, and this is the time to hurry up. If your child likes reading comics, start with comics, buy more good-looking comics for your children, and then infiltrate them into other types of books, such as \”Detective Dog\”. Regarding the problem of the second child, if the first graders don’t like reading, they can start with interesting ones, such as \”The Butt Detective\”, \”The Magic Umbrella Shop\”, and \”The Magic Snack Shop\”. Read to the two children every day, and at the same time, read to the eldest and oldest children. Catch up on both readings. 02Second question: My children like to listen to audio stories, which are told by story machines. Can this be used instead of parent-child reading for children to listen to for a long time? Children like to listen to stories, which is better than watching cartoons. But you can listen, but not for a long time. Because, although the story machine is very interesting, if the children listen to it for a long time, it will weaken the children\’s willingness to read paper storybooks. The voices of parents telling children picture book stories are the most beautiful voices in the world. When reading with children, it is not just reading, but also a two-way communication process, which cannot be replaced by story machines. Through the medium of picture books, parents and children can fight, play, cry and laugh together with their children. From this aspect, picture book reading gives children and parents the greatest communication channel and space. Wang Peijing said in the book \”Children Who Grow Up by Feeding Storybooks\”: Reading is the foundation of all education and learning, and love is the most precious asset between parents and children. Parent-child reading covers these two things that children need most. In addition, let’s talk about the utilitarian aspect. The ultimate goal of letting children listen to stories is actually to hope that children can fall in love with reading books, become interested in reading books, and develop good reading habits. Including hoping that in the process of reading paper books, children can gain a certain amount of literacy and improve their reading comprehension. Then these can only be obtained by reading paper books. 03 The third question: My family has been reading together since kindergarten. My child has always liked reading, but because he did not pay attention to literacy, now he is in first grade and still likes me to read to him. How can this be transformed into independent reading for the child? It’s already great that children are willing to read and understand. However, it takes a long process to switch from parent-child reading to independent reading, and parents need to persist for a while. Now that the child is in first grade, he will gradually gain a certain amount of literacy, so he can develop his independent reading ability by reading three books a day. A book that children want to read, parents and children can read together. A book that children have read and that children can read. Choose a book in which more than 85% of the characters are known, and ask the children to read it to their parents. A book that parents choose for their children. This part can be a little more difficult. Parents can tell their children about books that are two grades above their children. children read5 minutes, parents read for 30 minutes, children read for 10 minutes…slowly extend the time for children to read by themselves. If you persist in this way, the children will tell more and more picture books by themselves. In the process of reading the content of the stories, they will also consolidate their literacy and their ability to read independently will also be strengthened. There are three choices for children to read here: First, graded readings. For example, the \”Little Sheep Going Up the Mountain\” graded reading series is a story written in the simplest words and easy to understand. The second is interesting books. For example, \”The Butt Detective\”, \”Pigs on a Sunny Day\”, etc. These stories are very interesting and can entice children to read them actively. The third is the \”Chinese Supplementary Reader\” issued by the school. Because teachers also take children to read it in school. Children are familiar with it and will read it with interest. Finally, parents can create a reading ritual for their children and create opportunities for the whole family to tell stories. The purpose is to make the child feel that he can read by himself, which is very good. Only when children have a sense of achievement can they be motivated to read independently. 04 The fourth question: When your child enters first grade, you prepare some school-recommended, famous-recommended, or classic award-winning picture books for your child, but you find that some of the books are not interesting to your child. He prefers to watch interesting ones, such as the Butt Detective series, and is not interested in anything else. What should he do about this? Interesting books are the most attractive to children, and it is normal for children to like them. But children in first grade can already understand more complex stories. If the child still only likes to read books like \”The Butt Detective\”, then parents need to guide the child well and lead the child into the door of story books. First, you don’t like it as much as your children, so don’t prohibit your children from reading interesting books. As long as your children are willing to read them, it’s good. The more you read, your abilities will naturally improve, and it will become easier to read other types of books. Second, if you want to buy or recommend other types of storybooks for your children, parents need to do some homework in advance. This is conducive to children\’s liking and absorption. For example, \”The Animal World of Starring Dove\” starts with a twists and turns and touching story. After buying it, don’t just give it to your child to read. You should “sell” it to your child, read it with him, and let him discover the interest of other books. Third, you can start by listening to the audio of classic storybooks. For example, \”Niels Riding a Goose\” by Himalayas is a very interesting story about a little boy\’s fantasy adventure. Buy this kind of book for your children only after they are interested in it. Fourth, buy interesting and in-depth picture books to satisfy your children’s “searching and searching” pleasure in reading detective books. For example, Anthony Brown\’s \”Shape Game\” has many interesting details. In short, a multi-pronged approach is adopted and gradually penetrates. Naturally, the types of books children read will gradually diversify. Written at the end: Teacher Lin Zhenmei, a famous Taiwanese children\’s reading promoter, once said: Reading is not a process that achieves immediate results, but it is a process that must be continuously added, just like the process of putting wheat into a \”heap\”. Only when you stop and keep putting it in can there be a possibility of piles. As long as you insist on reading to your children, the accumulated rules will naturally take effect, and your children will also bring you unexpected surprises when you don\’t expect them. Therefore, let us persevere together on the journey of parent-child reading!
