My daughter is about to be in fourth grade. What I am most satisfied with is that she has truly fallen in love with reading. Reading is no longer a learning task, but has become a way to relax after studying. Looking back on the reading journey along the way, I will address everyone’s concerns. Some questions and share my views. 1. What should I do if my child just doesn’t like reading? The reason why he doesn\’t like to read is because he finds reading boring, so we have to find ways to turn reading into something interesting. We can start with content that interests him. Animation books are a good choice. After watching the animation, and then seeing the same plot in the book, sometimes he can read it with gusto without you having to explain it. 2. Should we give a first-grade child a fixed amount of time to read? When starting to develop reading habits, it is indeed necessary to set a fixed time and a fixed place to allow children to form conditioned reflexes. For example, my family has always read before going to bed. As soon as I say it\’s time to go to bed, my child will sit on the bed with a book and wait for me to tell her a story. 3. What should I do if my child becomes sleepy when reading and doesn’t understand the words? It’s still a question of book selection. He won’t be able to read anything he’s not interested in. Now if I ask you to read an academic paper, you’ll probably become drowsy. When developing reading habits from the beginning, parent-child reading cannot be circumvented. Don’t blame the children if parents are lazy. Through constant parent-child reading by parents, children will continue to encounter words, and their literacy will gradually increase. 4. Should children be required to point-read in first grade? The purpose of point-reading is to allow children to match the pronunciation and shape of characters one-to-one to prevent misreading, omissions, and serial reading. It can increase literacy and improve children\’s concentration. But when a child likes to read books by himself and is already attracted by the story, there is no need to force finger reading. 5. Do I need to point it out immediately if my child misses or adds words when reading? If your child reads smoothly in the past, if he occasionally misses or adds words, you can point it out at the time and remind him to pay attention. If he stumbles while reading, wait until he has finished reading before pointing it out. This will not dampen his interest in reading. 6. Do children need to be corrected if they read incorrectly or read serially? This must be corrected immediately. If you read it incorrectly or read it serially, the sentences will not flow smoothly and the story will not be coherent. The child should be able to detect the mistake after reading it. If he does not find it, it means that he is just reading the words dryly and not reading the words. To understand the sentences, adults should remind them in time. 7. When a child encounters a word he doesn’t recognize while reading, should he be asked to spell it by himself or should he be told directly? If he doesn\’t know only some characters, we should encourage him to spell them out by himself, which will also consolidate the pinyin. If there are a lot of unknown words, spelling out each word will affect the coherence of reading and make the children annoyed. Adults can just tell them directly. If there are too many unfamiliar words, it means the difficulty is a bit high. You can choose a simpler picture book for the child to read, or the adult can read it several times with the child, and then let the child try it after the child is familiar with it. 8. What should I do if I can’t read smoothly? Very normal. Especially for children who have just learned to read, sometimes they have to think about the pronunciation first when they see a word, so it is normal for them to stumble when reading. Just read it a few times. Parents should read the book several times with their children before reading it. The children should listen first and remember the general content before reading. The words they don\’t know can even be guessed. 9. What should I do if my child forgets the previous part after working hard? This shows that the reading content is too difficult for children, and their attention is focused on the spelling of individual words. At this time, don\’t let the child spell. Tell him the pronunciation directly. Reading will be much better when his literacy level increases. 10. Is it better to read in the morning or in the evening? Morning reading is suitable for reading short content that requires memorization, such as ancient poems or texts, while evening reading is more suitable for reading extracurricular books and parent-child reading.
