An interesting thing is that every year, the topics that parents care about during home visits have different themes. Last year, the focus of the home visit was on choosing a school. This year, the focus is on how to learn to read, write, and read. How can children quickly enter the learning state in the new semester and lead the class in reading, writing and literacy? Common misunderstandings among preschool children 1. Pointing reading Some parents point to each word while reading with their children, hoping to use this method to make their children read. Recognize words while reading. The problem with this method is that it causes children to only pay attention to the text and ignore the pictures. However, many picture books combine pictures and text to tell stories. For example, in the picture below, we know from the picture that the puppy knocked over the blocks and made a clattering sound, and the mother misunderstood Peter. A more serious problem with finger reading is that attention is focused on each word and the entire sentence or paragraph is ignored. The reading comprehension strategy is to give priority to grasping the meaning of the entire sentence or paragraph. 2. Literacy without text. Some parents set goals and teach their children to learn a few words every day. Children aged 5 and 6 usually find it boring and participate reluctantly or not at all. Hong En Literacy Course Free Edition Kindergarten Red Copybook, Children\’s Literacy Artifact This method of literacy separates the context of the text. Children only know the word, but it becomes unfamiliar when placed in an article or sentence, and they cannot flexibly form words. In other words, the child cannot use the word. 3. Literacy about the origin of Chinese characters. In recent years, it has become popular to teach literacy through stories about the origin of Chinese characters. Bitong used this method to teach children to read more than ten years ago. The advantage of this method is that children are interested and can understand the culture behind the text. The disadvantage is that the literacy efficiency is low, and it also strips away the literacy of the text. 4. Practice holding a pen and writing too early. Hand-eye coordination and hand grasping ability are the basis for holding a pen and writing. Most children can only learn the standard writing posture when they are around 6 years old. Parents who have such expectations for children before the age of six are asking for trouble. Only children with strong fingers, flexible wrists, and good hand-eye coordination can write stable and smooth words. Housework, origami, building blocks, paper-cutting, and various age-appropriate toys can all exercise hand flexibility. 5. Prematurely expecting children to independently read no more than 20% of the unknown words on a page of a book will make it possible for children to read independently. Independent reading is also related to the overall difficulty of the text. For example, story-based content is more approachable than information-based content. Parent-child reading is also a wonderful time for parents and children to spend time together. Most preschool children are still very dependent on their parents psychologically and enjoy this time very much. Children\’s independent reading is a natural process. As their psychological maturity increases, their literacy increases, and their curiosity becomes stronger, they will naturally leave their parents. Many parents of children around the age of 5 are eager to let their children read independently, because children of this age can understand more complex stories, have larger amounts of text, and take longer to read. Reading is a bit tiring. Some children accept the story machine and listening to stories online, some children do not accept it, and some children do not make a choice and want both. What can that do? Just read. The above methods of learning language and reading and writing have two subtexts: knowledge can only be acquired through formal learning. And, learning a language means learning to read and write. The teacher teaches students to learn. This learning method is not suitable for preschoolers.Children, I have detailed this fact in many previous articles. If we must break down the elements of language learning, it includes four items: listening, speaking, reading and writing. These four items are an integral whole and cannot be separated. Good listening, speaking, reading and writing skills, literacy and writing are just the foundation. It requires more vocabulary, understanding, and logic of expression. Action Guide for Improving Language Ability for All Ages Before 3 years old • Parent-child reading. Choose picture book stories that children can understand and be interested in. • Interact and communicate with children. • Encourage expression. • Practice more fine motor skills. Building blocks, doing puzzles, kneading dough, and dressing and taking off your own clothes are all good activities. • When water is sprinkled on the floor or table, they will apply it with their whole palms. They are using their hands to realize the traces they want in their minds, which is a kind of preparation for writing. 3-4 years old • Encourage children to express themselves in groups (expressing in public). • Stories told so many times that they can predict what will happen next. Stop and ask as you tell the story, \”What happened next?\” They\’ll be happy to add. • Work with your children to add details and adjectives. 4-5 years old • Draw what you see and think about. Children will refine the ideas in their heads as they draw. • Express yourself in public. • Teamwork and division of labor. • Understand simple diagrams such as lists of items and comparison charts. • Provide thinking strategies for their opinions and decisions. For example, let children choose plants to sow. Children often choose fruit plants that they are interested in. Coconuts and grapefruits may be their options. But by letting them understand the growing environment that plants need before making choices, children will make more appropriate choices. • Provide more writing opportunities. For example, in the Doll\’s House game, you pretend to be a doctor and write medical records, and the person in charge of the supermarket writes product labels. • Pay attention to reading opportunities in your life. For example, instructions with pictures and texts (installation instructions for items are often pictures and texts), product names, shopping receipts, tickets… • Record the child\’s language through words. Children will establish a connection between language and Chinese characters, develop a strong interest in Chinese characters and writing, and learn some Chinese characters in the process. When children find that reading and writing are of very practical use in their lives, they will actively absorb this information. Some children over 4 years old will imitate \”drawing\” characters, which means they begin to pay attention to the structure of characters and develop a strong interest in Chinese characters. The order of strokes is irregular and the posture of holding the pen is irregular, but there is no need to correct it. After entering the formal writing stage after the age of 6, you can quickly correct it. Children also show clear hand dominance, and some children are left-handed without actually needing correction. Some more tolerant teachers now accept left-handed writing. 5-6 years old • Express opinions and give reasons for their opinions. • Create stories, continue stories, and express themes. • Understand the structure of a book. • Understand the story structure, including: main characters, where the story takes place, causes and consequences. • Infer the meaning of a new word based on context. • Find the information you need from the text. • Hold pen and write simple Chinese characters and numbers in a standardized manner. What else can parents do? I particularly encourage their children to pay attention to language skills and Chinese literacy. pragmatic perspectiveIt is said that the Chinese language test questions in middle and high schools are in class, and the answers are all outside class. The language literacy developed in childhood begins to play a role. If you do not pay attention to it in childhood, this course will become difficult, and it will not be able to achieve short-term results through tutoring. Good Chinese literacy is not only helpful for Chinese courses, but also liberal arts courses will benefit from it to a greater or lesser extent. The advanced English exam does not just test vocabulary. What is tested is the reading, understanding, analysis, and expression abilities gained in the mother tongue. Instead of \”teaching\” children to read and write, the greater value of families is to provide a rich language environment. Parents can also do the following: • Parent-child reading • Read more by yourself and share your reading experience with your children. • Look for writing opportunities in your life. For example, travel records, making shopping lists, writing postcards, greeting cards… There are about 3,000 commonly used Chinese characters. Literacy and literacy are skills that are not huge and can be learned by every child. How to use these Chinese characters to express yourself clearly, understand others, think more logically, and express more convincingly are abilities that will last a lifetime.
