Pregnant Australian teen smokes to make childbirth easier

Smoking may reduce fetal weight. This is one of the warnings printed on cigarette packages sold in Australia. Unexpectedly, some underage pregnant women who were afraid that the fetus would be too large to have children were \”inspired\”.

Simon Dennis, an associate professor at the Australian National University, spent 10 years interviewing many smokers and found that some underage mothers who had never smoked before started smoking in order to shrink the fetus in the womb. Some underage mothers-to-be who used to smoke have increased their smoking as a result. The youngest of these pregnant women is only 16 years old. Denise told Australia\’s Daily Telegraph she was shocked by the discovery. \”They see words on cigarette packs that smoking may cause weight loss in babies, but that\’s a public health warning and obviously shouldn\’t be interpreted that way.\” Dennis noted that the dangers of smoking also include an increased risk of stillbirth, as well as the risk of asthma and allergies in the child after birth, but these teenage pregnant women are blind to these risks due to their young age and fear of childbirth.
