Reminder: Expectant mothers should not drink Coke

Although it\’s midsummer, the temperature is still high, which makes people have a soft spot for drinks such as Coke. Pregnant women, in particular, tend to have difficulty resisting the temptation of drinks such as Coke because their body tends to be hot after pregnancy and they are more prone to dry mouth. It is known that both expectant mothers and fetuses are highly susceptible to caffeinated substances.

Director Zhao Xiaoling of the Perinatal Health Center of Oriental Maternity Hospital said that Coke is a carbonated drink containing caffeine. Caffeine can quickly pass through the placenta and affect the fetus, and the fetus is particularly sensitive to caffeine. Excessive intake may affect the development of the baby\’s brain, heart, liver and other important organs, and may also increase the incidence of miscarriage, premature birth, and underweight babies. Therefore, pregnant women should be careful about drinking caffeinated beverages. Director Zhao also suggested that women who have a long-term habit of drinking cola and are planning to have children should quit cola before giving birth to prevent residual caffeine from affecting fertilized eggs.

Because tea can effectively eliminate fatigue, promote human metabolism, maintain the normal function of the heart and blood vessels, and contains zinc, an indispensable trace element for pregnant women, pregnant women can drink tea in moderation.
