Recently, as the temperature has dropped, the hot summer is about to pass. Some babies were fine yesterday, but when they get up the next day, they start to have nasal congestion and runny nose. Mothers don’t want to give medicine to their babies. So, here’s what to do: It is important to understand why your baby has a stuffy or runny nose and treat it accordingly. There are basically three types of runny noses in infants and young children: nasal discharge, white sticky nasal discharge, and yellow nasal discharge. Runny nose is a phenomenon of the body\’s self-defense caused by cold air invading the lungs. Runny nose, like sweat and tears, is a way to regulate cold and heat in the body. Children with short airways are more likely to have a runny nose, which is normal. 1. Runny nose caused by colds. Most of the nasal discharge will be watery at the beginning of a cold. After 3-5 days, it will turn into purulent discharge and gradually heal. However, it will continue to flow during the cold. As the cold heals, the purulent component of mucopurulent nasal discharge will gradually decrease. If the baby has a runny nose after being invaded by the cold wind and has a cold or fever, it means that the condition has improved. 2. Allergic rhinitis is often accompanied by symptoms such as nasal congestion, nasal itching, and sneezing. It is especially obvious after getting up in the morning. When you get out of the warm bed, you will sneeze immediately and have an itchy feeling in your nose, followed by clear discharge. If the bleeding doesn\’t stop, you need to be alert to whether your baby has allergic rhinitis. It is especially serious in winter, and most babies with allergic rhinitis also suffer from asthma. 3. There is a foreign body in the nasal cavity. If there is a smell in the baby\’s nasal cavity on one side, purulent discharge, and sometimes blood streaks in the nasal cavity, it is necessary to consider whether there is a foreign body in the nasal cavity. This situation mostly occurs in children around 3 years old. When playing, out of curiosity, they often put paper, beans, and other foreign objects into their nasal cavities. After they are inserted, they cannot be taken out and cause a smell. However, small metal parts, small Buttons may not cause a bad smell when inserted into the nasal cavity. 4. Acute and Chronic Rhinitis When babies develop sinusitis secondary to acute or chronic rhinitis, they often have a lot of nasal discharge that seems to be \”endless\”, sometimes accompanied by headaches. If your baby has yellow discharge from his nose and the pus has a strong odor, especially if he has a cold and the illness lasts for more than 10 days, but he still has mucopurulent nasal discharge, he should consider whether he has paranasal sinusitis. 5. Cold air stimulates a runny nose because the cold air invades the lungs and the body develops its own defense. Like sweat and tears, nasal mucus is a way to regulate cold and heat in the body. The weather is cold in winter, and the cold wind stimulates the baby\’s airway, which can easily cause a runny nose. This is why babies often have runny noses in winter. If the baby only has a runny nose and no other uncomfortable symptoms, parents don’t need to worry. You can give the baby a hot compress. Use a clean towel or gauze, dip it in hot boiling water and wring it out. Then place the cloth at the base of the child\’s nose (that is, a little bit below the eyebrows) and apply hot compress. 6. Nasal polyps. If some babies only have nasal discharge on one side, but they cannot blow it out, their nostrils are blocked, and they snore while sleeping, then they should be alert to the presence of nasal polyps.
