Will gonorrhea cause female infertility?

Gonorrhea is mainly transmitted through direct sexual contact. There are few indirect infections, mainly through contact with clothing, bedpans, equipment, etc. contaminated by secretions of gonorrhea patients.

After gonococcus enters the reproductive tract, it quickly causes gonococcal inflammation of the cervical canal, which further ascends and causes damage, necrosis and shedding of the epithelial cells of the fallopian tube mucosa. As a result, scar formation and adhesions are blocked in the fallopian tube, and the fimbriae of the fallopian tube and the surrounding areas are damaged. Adhesions and atresia prevent sperm and eggs from meeting each other, leading to infertility.

The incubation period of acute gonorrhea is about 7 days. It begins to manifest as acute urethritis, cervicitis, paraurethritis and Pasteurian adenitis. When urinating, there is burning pain and frequent urination, and the leucorrhea increases and is yellow and purulent. There may be swelling, tenderness or a painful lump in the lower part of the vagina. Acute gonorrhea without treatment or incomplete treatment can gradually turn into chronic gonorrhea. It may manifest as dull pain in the lower abdomen or lumbosacral pain, often accompanied by an acute attack of pelvic inflammatory disease. Gynecological examination may show signs of chronic urethritis, chronic endocervicitis, and Bartholin\’s gland cyst.
